Why regulation-lite is least bad option for press

THAT press ethics are being subject to scrutiny right now, in autumn 2012, is deeply ironic. The Government is under pressure to legislate on the print media just when shoddy journalism at the BBC has been exposed, just when a multitude of defamatory statements on Twitter has left potentially scores of members of the public facing legal action, and not long since MPs were infamously exposed – by a newspaper – as fiddling their expenses on a massive scale.
